Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) president Dr. Jeff Goodwin announced the hiring of new softball and baseball coaches Angel Brown and David Langston at a press conference this afternoon (3/8) in the gym on the Shoals campus.

"This is an exciting day for Northwest-Shoals and our community,” said Goodwin. “Patriots athletics are back, and we could not be happier about the hire of Coach Brown and Coach Langston. They are both products of the Alabama Community College System as players and coaches. They know exactly how special community college athletics are for the athletes in our area. These are two individuals that bring energy, passion, and experience that will serve our college well on the field and in the community.”

Brown, a native of Reform, Ala., comes to NW-SCC after a three-year stint at the NCAA Division II level as an assistant with West Alabama and most recently with the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Prior to her time in the Gulf South Conference, Brown returned to her alma mater and led Bevill State as their head softball coach when they reinstated athletics in 2016. Along with her collegiate coaching experience, she has worked extensively coaching travel softball organizations in Birmingham.

According to Brown, being selected as the NW-SCC Patriots head softball coach is an answered prayer. “I am beyond grateful that Dr. Goodwin and the selection committee have granted me this amazing opportunity to help lead the return of athletics to Northwest-Shoals,” Brown stated.  “Being selected as the head softball coach for the Patriots is an answered prayer that allows me to continue to positively impact the lives of young athletes through servant leadership.”

Brown played softball and earned an associate degree from Bevill State Community College before heading to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to earn her bachelor and master’s degree in Physical Education.

Langston, a native of Jasper, Ala., has coached baseball on the community college and high school level for the past 25 years. He served as head baseball coach at NW-SCC for 10 years prior to the College suspending athletics in 2011. In those 10 seasons, Langston led the Patriots to a record of 327-160 which included five Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) championships and two regional Coach of the Year awards. During his time at NW-SCC, over 70 players signed baseball scholarships to four year colleges. Most recently he has coached at area high schools including Muscle Shoals, Bob Jones, Florence and currently at defending 5A state champion Russellville.

Langston earned his bachelor degree in Secondary Education (History) from Birmingham Southern.

According to Langston, he was filled with emotions when he received the call to be offered the job. “Being a player on the first team in 1993 and coaching here from 2001-2011, makes Northwest-Shoals feel like home,” said Langston. “I know the positive impact this baseball program had on me and many other players over the years. I look forward to getting started recruiting some of the top athletes from this area and representing Northwest-Shoals on and off the field. I am very grateful to the administration for the opportunity to lead this baseball program. It is a very exciting time for our institution and the community.”
