University of North Alabama issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.

The University of North Alabama ChemE Car Team finished in the final four at the 2020 ChemE Car Competition at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Southern Regional Conference. The win qualifies the team for the national competition at the International ChemE Car Competition as part of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Student Conference.

“For three of the past four years, teams of exceptional students in the Department of Engineering and Technology have combined their knowledge of engineering and science to successfully earn a spot to compete at the international level in AICheE’s ChemE Car Competition,” said Dr. Jonathan Sullivan, Professor and Chemical Engineering Laboratory Coordinator. “This year’s team is continuing that tradition of excellence and is proud to represent the University of North Alabama in this worldwide event.”

ChemE car competitions are an integral part of the experiential learning process, which is a key component of degree completion at UNA.

“This competition has been endorsed by our NASA stakeholder as simulating the control systems and encompassing the multi-functional technology skills needed in advanced applications,” said Dr. Pete Rim, Director and Department Chair for the Department of Engineering and Technology.

The skills students acquire as part of the competitions then translate into the workforce, particularly in STEM-related fields and industries.

“Our program features options in Bio-Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, and Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology with outstanding faculty who are not only specialists in their field but also have real work experience and expertise,” said Dr. Sara Lynn Baird, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Students participate in a wide variety of experiential opportunities, hands-on learning, and related activities like the ChemE Car Team. We also offer the Master of Applied Manufacturing Engineering for those interested in working toward an advanced degree.”
