Lauderdale Co School District issued the following announcement on Oct. 16..
Lauderdale County Schools announced it has partnered with energy and sustainability expert, Schneider Electric, to implement a capital recovery and reinvestment project that will greatly modernize buildings and improve energy use across the school district’s infrastructure. The project provides the district with a path forward to addressing critical facility needs in a fiscally responsible way.
The project will allow the school district to reduce its energy consumption by 35% and save the district over $550,000 annually. Continued cycles of deferred maintenance have caused some of the buildings in the district to start deteriorating. The buildings are between 30 and 80 years old and many have issues related to leaking roofs, 25+ year old HVAC equipment, aging lighting and building envelopes. Schneider Electric is partnering with Lauderdale County Schools to improve comfort for students and faculty by enabling the district to take advantage of a capital recovery and reinvestment strategy that allows the schools to pay for the critical facility upgrades through the energy savings generated. “We want to provide our communities with the best services possible, and Schneider Electric has an excellent track record across the state with helping K-12 schools reach their infrastructure goals,” said Jonathan Hatton, superintendent, Lauderdale County Schools. “This project will get students and their teachers excited to come into the building and be in an environment that will have a positive impact on their teaching and learning.”
Schneider Electric will implement modern technologies that will generate savings and in turn create a revenue stream to help fund improvements across the district, such as:
● Improving the learning environment for students by replacing more than 18,0000 interior lights in lighting upgrades and building technology enhancements
● Increasing the safety and security across school campuses with exterior lighting enhancements
● Replacing more than 100,000 square feet of failing roofs
● Reducing maintenance time and extending the life of outdated systems with the replacement and upgrades of more than 450 heating and cooling systems—current systems are 20-40+ years old
● Enhancing district-wide telecommunications with upgraded telephone systems
● Expanding maintenance capabilities and reducing operational costs at all schools with smart building automation
● Renewing improvements to the building envelopes by refurbishing aging buildings to increase the comfort for students, staff, and community members
