Cost of college went up for all students at Northwest-Shoals Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 6.8 percent for 2018-19 at Northwest-Shoals Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Alabama residents paid $4,711 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $300 more than the $4,411 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 82.1 percent more than residents this year, or $8,581. Their price tag grew 8.3 percent from $7,921 in 2017-18.

About 96 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Alabama residents. And about 1 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 92 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 587 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.9 million and 124 students took out student loans totaling more than $565,218.

Including all undergraduates (3,539), 2,149 students used grants or scholarships totaling $9.2 million, and 678 students took out $3.5 million in federal student loans.
